Journalist Asad Toor's Bail Granted by Islamabad Trial Court
In a recent legal development, journalist Asad Toor has been granted bail by the FIA court against surety bonds of Rs5,000. This decision comes after Toor was arrested on charges under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act for allegedly launching a malicious campaign against state institutions. The case, which sparked concerns over freedom of expression and press freedom in Pakistan, saw Toor facing a tumultuous legal battle.
The bail approval has been met with reactions from various quarters, with journalist Hamid Mir stating that it proves that the allegations against Toor were baseless. Barrister Ahsan J Pirzada commended Toor's legal team for their perseverance in securing his bail despite numerous obstacles.
During the hearing, Special Judge Central Humayun Dilawar considered the Supreme Court's observation that journalists should not be booked over social media campaigns against superior judges. The investigation officer and FIA prosecutor confirmed the veracity of this observation, leading to the acceptance of Toor's bail plea.
The case, which unfolded amid calls for Toor's release from organizations like the Committee to Protect Journalists, sheds light on the challenges faced by journalists in Pakistan in exercising their right to freedom of expression. Toor's legal journey, marked by delays and legal hurdles, underscores the importance of safeguarding press freedom and upholding the rights of journalists in the country.
