Heated Call Between Biden and House Democrats Highlights Growing Tensions
In an intense weekend phone call, President Joe Biden faced fierce criticism from some House Democrats, revealing deep concerns within his party about his performance and voter support. The heated exchange began when Congressman Jason Crow, a moderate Democrat and former Army Ranger, bluntly told Biden that voters were losing confidence in him, particularly on the global stage. Biden's response was equally blunt, reminding Crow that while he may have a Bronze Star like Biden's late son Beau, he "didn't rebuild NATO."
The tension escalated as Crow pushed back, insisting that voters weren't seeing Biden in a favorable light. Biden, visibly angered, retorted that he "didn't want to hear that crap" and suggested that Crow should walk away if he couldn't support him, which Crow refused to do.
Congresswoman Christy Houlihan of Pennsylvania also clashed with Biden, expressing her worries about his standing in a crucial battleground county. When Houlihan presented polling data to back her concerns, Biden dismissed her, offering to send her talking points on his accomplishments in Pennsylvania and reminding her of his connection to the state through his wife, a Philadelphia native.
The contentious call reflects growing unease among House Democrats about Biden's campaign strategy and his perceived detachment from the realities on the ground. Democratic Congressman Jared Moskowitz of Florida, who was on the call, voiced his worries that Biden's inner circle might be shielding him from critical polling data and grassroots feedback.
Despite the internal strife, Democrats remain focused on their primary goal: defeating Donald Trump. However, the party's internal divisions could complicate this objective, especially with Trump enjoying a recent streak of legal victories and surviving an assassination attempt, which has further polarized the political climate.
As the Democratic National Committee prepares for a virtual roll call and early nomination of Biden ahead of their convention, concerns persist about the timing and implications of this move. With critical races for the House and Senate also on the horizon, the Democratic Party faces a delicate balancing act to maintain unity and momentum heading into the November elections.
